Mediterranean Sighting

GR5

Day 51 - Closing In

The usual set-off before sunrise proves more strenuous than in the previous days. A closed path near the day's highest point causes some confusion before long winding trails culminate in a slow descent towards the Mediterranean Sea in the background. With the absence of any water sources until mid-afternoon, a local platter and some much needed fluids are downed in the day's initially intended endpoint of Etelle. With the ever-growing desire to complete the trek, the decision is made to continue on for several hours still. Water shortage remaining an issue, the choice is made to go on past the next big town where the water bottles can be refilled. In the pitch darkness of an overgrown and steep forest, a resting point is chosen well after sunset. Reamining as quiet and discreet as possible with the flashlight, the tent is pitched for the final time along the GR5.
