GR5 Completion
Day 52 - Arrival in Nice
A growling visitor outside the tent at 1 a.m. is dealt with in an easier manner than the herd a few nights prior. Despite the appalling quality and quantity of rest, the final day begins in familiar fashion before sunrise. With the eyes firmly on the prize and the coast getting ever closer, the reality of the situation starts to kick in. Having set out on an immense trek across the continent, the destination was about to be reached. Feelings of pride and a sense of achievement are countered by those of sadness and emtpiness. On a mini trip down memory lane of sorts, some of the most frequently played tracks en route ring in the hiker's ear as he arrives at the Promenade des Anglais in Nice. Gentle tears resembling the mixed emotions are hidden behind sunglasses amongst the countless strangers bathing in the sun.
Feeling out of place, in need of nutrients and wanting to go home; a portion of Fish and Chips along with some celebratory pints of beer do the job of lifting the spirits somewhat. A less than elegant walk to the train station brings the active chapter of the fifty-two days spent hiking along the GR5 to a close. The memories thereof, realisations made, understandings gained and lessons learned will not be boxed off in this chapter though instead provide a basis to build upon as a new phase of life beckons.
